A geological marvel, the Salar de Uyuni is one of the most perfectly flat areas on earth. There aren’t hills, bumps, shadows, vegetation or depressions of any sort, and given the lack of visual reference points in such an immense area, one’s sense of perspective is bound to become skewed. Our guide, Faustino, asked me to estimate the distance of a mountain looming on the horizon. I thought it was surely within walking distance, and guessed about ten kilometers. The answer was over fifty.
Yes, it’s one of the world’s true geological marvels, and the largest global source of lithium, but among fun-seeking visitors, the Salar de Uyuni is most famous as a place to take wacky pictures which mess with perspective. “Formation and development and unique and blah blah, now get out of the way so I can pretend to squash my friend under my boot!” It was a little weird to be in such a compelling, singular corner of Earth, and everyone just wants to take crazy photos. But of course we joined in…

You guys have to visit Bolivia – it’s a quick flight and fairly cheap. And once here you will love the prices. Don’t delay! Bolivia is calling (we can watch the cats 🙂 )
